M-co was established in 1993. As a joint venture with the electricity industry, our role was to design, implement and operate a wholesale electricity market in New Zealand. We were given a completion time of 15 months. And we brought the project in on time and on budget.
The New Zealand Electricity Market launched on 1 October 1996. Since then, it has claimed several 'world firsts'. Such as COMIT - the first internet-based electricity trading and information system.
In 1999, we became part of the FirstRand Group and expanded our service offerings into Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe.
In 2007, the senior management team of M-co acquired M-co NZ from FirstRand Group.
In 2009, M-co NZ was sold to NZX Limited.
Thanks to our international strength, our experts here in New Zealand have worked on many overseas projects, including a joint venture in Singapore to create and run that country's wholesale electricity market. And we helped design a framework for South Africa's wholesale electricity market.
As we gathered more and more experience and skills from working on overseas projects, all our customers reaped the benefits. Here are a few more of our recent projects:
Partnering in the new competitive gas markets in New South Wales and ACT.
Establishing and operating the Singapore wholesale electricity market.
Designing Taiwan's electricity market operator.
Training Chinese, South Korean and Hong Kong power authorities to manage market reform.
Designing the framework for South Africa’s wholesale electricity market.
Developed IT platforms for a large scale trading simulation of green enegy certificates.
